Maine has the highest population of moose in the lower 48 states, with Aroostook County having the highest population of moose in Maine. We offer hunts in Maine's Wildlife Management Districts (Zones) 3, 5 & 6 and have been guiding moose hunts in this area for the past 12 years, with a very high success rate.
A moose hunt with 207 Outfitters is an experience you will never forget. We strive to make your time with us an interactive and memorable adventure like no other. Imagine the excitement of a rut-crazed, bull moose grunting, crashing and raking his antlers on the trees as he comes to the sound of your guide’s calls, or lying in your cot in a comfortable wall tent after a day of hunting, as a rutting bull walks by at night, less than 100 yards away, grunting and raking its antlers, chasing after a hot cow.
While we tailor the hunts to your abilities, our preferred style of moose hunting is walking and calling through the woods, trying to locate a receptive bull in the areas we have pre-scouted. Many of our bulls are harvested long distances from any road or access point. This is one reason we skin and quarter the moose in the field, which allows the meat to cool properly, giving you the best quality meat possible.
Our moose hunt base camp is located in WMD 6 and only a short distance from WMD 3 & 5.
Moose hunting in Maine is a “permit only” hunt. In 2023, 4,105 permits were issued. Permits are awarded by a draw utilizing a bonus point system. Permits are issued for a specific week, Management Unit (WMD), and for either an antlerless or bull moose. Twenty-one of Maine’s twenty-nine WMDs offer some form of moose hunting. Permit winners can name a sub-permittee. This individual is a “second shooter” and can participate in the hunt but must hunt in the presence of the permit winner. Permit winners may hunt without the sub-permittee but a sub-permittee may not hunt without the permit winner. The Maine moose hunt is for an assigned week (Monday through Saturday, no Sunday hunting in Maine) and ranges from late September through November. Hunting rutting bull moose is possible during the September and first October week hunts. This can make for some up close and personal hunting action!
The application period for the fall of 2024 season opens April 1, 2024. All applications must be submitted by May 15, 2024. If you're reading this during this time frame, apply now! Hunters 10 years of age or older on the opening day of the moose hunt are eligible to apply for a moose hunting permit in that calendar year. Hunters under the age of 10 on the opening day of the moose hunting season may apply to earn a point in the lottery system, but cannot receive a permit.
