Maine Moose Hunt
Maine has the highest population of moose in the lower 48 states, and Aroostook County is known for having some of the strongest moose numbers in Maine. 207 Outfitters offers fully guided Maine moose hunts in Wildlife Management Districts 3, 5 and 6. We have been guiding moose hunters in this region for the past 12 years and know the country, access points, terrain and logistics that go into a successful northern Maine moose hunt.
A moose hunt with 207 Outfitters is an experience you will never forget. Our goal is to give hunters a professional, well-planned and memorable Maine hunting adventure. There is nothing quite like hearing a rutting bull moose grunting, raking trees and closing distance in response to your guide’s calls. The September and early October hunts can produce exciting, up-close encounters with mature bull moose during the rut.
We tailor each hunt to the hunter’s abilities, but our preferred style of moose hunting is walking and calling through the woods in areas that have been pre-scouted. Many of our bulls are harvested long distances from roads or easy access points. Because of that, field care matters. We skin and quarter moose in the field when needed, allowing the meat to cool properly and helping ensure the best quality meat possible.
Our moose hunt base camp is located in WMD 6 and is only a short distance from WMD 3 and WMD 5. This gives our hunters a strong northern Maine base of operations for guided moose hunts in some of the state’s best moose country.

Maine Moose Permit Information
Moose hunting in Maine is a permit-only hunt administered through the annual lottery system managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. For the 2026 season, Maine will issue 3,705 moose hunting permits. Permits are awarded through a bonus point lottery system, giving repeat applicants additional chances in future drawings.
Each Maine moose permit is issued for a specific hunting week, Wildlife Management District (WMD), and either an antlerless or bull moose. Twenty-one of Maine’s twenty-nine WMDs offer some form of moose hunting. The Maine moose hunt is assigned by week, Monday through Saturday, with no Sunday hunting in Maine. Seasons typically run from late September through November, depending on the district and permit type.
Permit winners may name a subpermittee. This person acts as a second shooter and may actively participate in the hunt, but only while hunting in the presence of the permit holder. The permit holder may hunt without the subpermittee, but the subpermittee may not hunt without the permit holder present.
One of the most exciting opportunities in the Maine moose season is hunting rutting bull moose during the September and early October hunts. During the rut, mature bulls can become vocal and responsive, creating the kind of close-range calling encounters that make Maine moose hunting so memorable.
The application period for the fall 2026 Maine moose hunt opens April 1, 2026. All applications must be submitted by May 18, 2026. If you're reading this during that application window, apply now. Hunters 10 years of age or older on the opening day of the moose hunt are eligible to apply for and receive a moose hunting permit. Hunters under the age of 10 on opening day may apply to earn a point in the lottery system, but cannot receive a permit.
